Purchased the 75K BTU propane model. Easy to install, mounted it to ceiling joists in my work barn. Hook up a propane line, a 120VAC power line, a 2-wire thermostat, and the exhaust, and you're good to go. Using B-vent for the exhaust makes things a lot easier, just measure, get your components, drill a hole, and piece it together. I have about $80 in B-vent components for a roof exhaust (two 18" and one 36" pipes, a T and a T cap, flashing, storm collar, top cap, and a support bracket).
The unit runs quieter than others I've seen in operation, and throws heat as far as the specs said (38'). My only apprehension was the included mounting brackets are held onto the unit with just six 3/4" metal screws. I added one more on each side for a total of 8, and its very solid, but I'd be a little more comfortable with more substantial bracket mounting hardware.
If the unit continues to perform well, it has earned the 5-star rating I gave.(Posted on 5/2/13)
- Good Replacement for my original heating unit Review by Ted R
-
Originally installed a used 80,000 BTU heating unit that was way oversized for my 800 SF insulated, 4-car garage/shop in Northern Nevada. Tired of replacing the thermocouple and ordered a replacement 30,000 BTU unit. The New Modine unit is very compact and fits very well. Well constructed, pretty quiet and works very well. Proper sizing makes a big difference in operation. Heating bill dropped dramatically. Very pleased with QC Supply in both communication, lightening fast shipping and product as described. Highly recommend QC Supply and Modine products for your next purchase. If you are treated as well as I, you won't be disappointed.

Smokin' fast delivery. Purchased Saturday night online and it was on my door step Tuesday afternoon. The product box looked like brand spankin' new with no damage of any sort so kudos to your delivery company. This is my first Modine purchase and so far I'm impressed with the product and I hope that it holds up. Good job, keep it up, and thanks for the gloves.

I installed the Hot Dawg 45 on the ceiling of my two-car garage. I used the mounting brackets that came with the unit and they worked as described. The brackets provided the minimum 1" clearance to the ceiling.
My garage is not insulated and the temperature outside is around 25 degrees. The heater was able to heat the garage in about 15 minutes up to 65 degrees and was able to maintain that temperature without continuously running. I would recommend this product for a garage/shop application.(Posted on 1/22/13)

This review is for our Modine Hot Dawg heater, Model HD-60 (60,000 btu) burning natural gas. After some research, including a heat-loss analysis to determine appropriate sizing, we found the best price from QC Supply. Fast standard shipping via FedEx Ground was included in the price. The unit came fully assembled and ready to go to work right out of the box. Overall design, workmanship, fit and finish is excellent. We're heating a new construction 2 1/2 car garage and workshop area (28' x 28') with 11' ceiling and a heated living space above here in the chilly hills of Western New England. It was below freezing yesterday with the wind gusting over 40 mph but my garage stayed warm and toasty with the heater cycling only a few times an hour. Straightforward installation and very quiet operation.
Clear, concise instructions provided by Modine, downloadable from QC website if you want to plan ahead. To complete the installation you flip the mounting brackets over from the shipping position and provide your own threaded rod and other hardware to mount to ceiling. You must also provide vent pipe, gas piping and electrical to comply with local code. I'm an experienced DIY'er and my buddy is a top notch plumber who has installed many Hot Dawgs. It was out of the box, mounted to the ceiling, gas piped and vented in about two hours. 30 minutes more for electrical, only because I took the time to run EMT conduit for a nice, clean installation. It fired right up with no problems. There was only a slight "hot metal" smell for about 10 minutes during the initial run-in, as should be expected from any new heater. It is now running beautifully (and quietly) on a Honeywell programmable thermostat, although any standard basic thermostat will do. The HD-60 draws 2.5 amps so you can comfortably run either 12 or 14 ga wiring for line voltage. Thermostat wire is standard 2 conductor (only red & white terminals are used).
All in all, this is a very nice heater doing exactly what it was designed to do. This was our first purchase from QC Supply and we will definitely buy again. They have a very easy us use website, excellent product selection, logical check-out process and great communications from purchase to delivery. Highly recommended.(Posted on 12/23/12)
- A LITTLE MUSTARD and RELISH! Review by BMW 64
-
Just purchased and installed the Modine Hot Dawg 45 BTU Heater for a 16' x 30' Barn/ATV Shop located here in Western New York. Being way out in the 'sticks' and hills smack in the middle of 'lake effect' snow region, winters here can be quite brutal with very cold temps and winds!
My shop is an ongoing restoration project started this past Spring of an old barn built way back in the 30's that really needed some major work. Along with new cement floor, re-framing of walls, insulation, siding, 9 windows and just a whole bunch of other stuff along the way ... a decent, efficient propane heating system was tops on the 'to do' list come cold weather. After advice of local HVAC outfits and looking at all the various makes, models of gas heaters ... everything pointed to the Modine Hot Dawg! The high efficiency, quality construction of the unit, along with the great price and superb service of QC Supply made the choice an easy one! After determining what size was best overall for my application, ordering on line was very simple and unit arrived safe, sound and packed very nicely in less than a week.
Originally was going to go with the 60K unit ... but after considering BTU/fuel use/cost and that building is well insulated with 3.5" fiber glass in walls and foil faced foam higher up and in ceiling, I went with the 45K unit. QC Supply was very helpful in answering all installation questions, gas/electrical hook-ups and such. Considered using one the Quick-Sling Rafter Mount systems they offer ... but, after measuring and scoping everything out - I mounted unit flush to a pair of 2'x6' boards built within the overhead beams for a very secure installation. Unit is also positioned near the middle of the back wall at about 8 foot height as opposed to a higher location in the corner. Reason for this was *Easier mounting to rafter/beams *Ease of servicing and maintenance *Lower, more centralized heat discharge.
Am in the process now of installing wall mounted hard pipe gas line and getting electric over to unit. So Far So Good, and the Hot Dawg looks great hanging there!! Can't wait to get the thing cranking out some heat and actually able to work out there during the winter months without seeing your breath!(Posted on 12/22/12)

- Great, reliable heaters Review by Ron

I live in Sandpoint, Idaho (winters 10 to 30 degrees). Heating a divided, insulated, pole barn 36' x 60' x 12' high. My first heater is the 75,000btu (it "throws" the heat 40ft.) the second one is the 45,000btu (it "throws" the heat 30ft.). Keeping the barn divided with a wall and large roll-up door really helps keep the heating cost down. If you are not sure what size heater to get, check out Modine's Hot Dawg web-site and you can determine the btu's you need by seeing how far it "throws" the heat. Great, reliable heater, have been using them for 8 years.

My new heater came the other day. I installed it with the instructions given and all went very well. I had to call QC when I ordered it and a heart beat picked up the other line and directed me to a tech to answered my order and need questions. It made my decision and ordering process go real well. The service and politeness help out for the DIY guys. The unit is now rockin and I'm happy with it and with QC. It made me look around at what else they sell.

Well I bought this unit to replace an old house unit that had been in my garage when we moved in 11 years ago. Time to clear some floor space. Unit installed easily and fired right up. It is not that cold yet but it pushes out some heat so I am sure it will do the job. Great Unit great price.. Two of my neighbors know I research most everything I buy. They told me I was the guinea pig, if it works well for me you might just sell a few more to my neighbors.

Bought the 75,000 btu propane unit in 2003. I keep my 3 car garage in NJ @ about 37-38 degrees when I am not out there just to keep above freezing mark. Takes about 45 min or so to warm up to 60 degrees when its 20 out. Not too bad. Never had a problem yet (knock on wood)!!! Very happy with heater.

- Hot Dawn HD 60 k - perfect 3 car garage heater Review by Papa Edy
-
I purchased this heater for a 3 1/2 car, short side attached garage 750 SF, 4" Insulation on ceiling , and 1" foam board on the walls with brick. 3 insulated doors. Normally it get down to 40 degrees in the winter. I did plenty of research and picked this unit. I am very happy. I keep 2 cars in the garge and lots of tools. I wanted a heater that would slowly rise the temp continously without cooking me when I am in front of the heater. I also didn't want the on off cyles that causes you to be hot-cold-hot-cold untill it reaches the temp setting on the thermostat. This heater is perfect. Runs about an hour to rise the temp 20 degrees. than it's off, and the temp holds for quite a while. The slow ris in temp also lets the car 's temp rise in sync with the air. The only problem is my wife is not happy that I'm now working in the garage in the winter with flip flops and a t-shirt on. I love it!

I received this unit a few weeks ago. It came in with a bent side, but QC and Modine quickly shipped out a replacement side. It installed easily and the thermostat (Johnson Controls) worked good with the unit. I seems to heat well and I think it will be very cost effective. The unit is very quite and appears well made.

This is my 2nd Modine Hot Dawg heater in my garage. I believe the gas valve went bad in my other and since it was 10 yr.s old, I decided to replace the whole heater. While you should have 2 people to install this in the ceiling, it is small enough that I was able to accomplish it by myself. Since the gas line and vent system were already there, it was an easy install with just a quick trip to Menards for the right length gas pipe to go to the gas valve. The heater works great in my 3 stall garage in northern SD where winters can be quite cold. It takes about 20 min.s to heat it from 45 degrees (where I keep it for winter) up to about 55-60 degrees if I'm going to work out there. Very nice heater for the price.

This is my second Hot Dawg Heater for my garage. Instead of converting my older unit which was propane, I purchased a natural gas unit. I could not be happier with QC Supply. Their price for the unit was the lowest. Period. And to get free shipping , you cannot go wrong. Plus, to have it delivered 2 days after I ordered it, that is just amazing. Their customer service emailed me when the order was processed and i was able to track it during transit. You cannot go wrong with QC supply. As for the heater it is the best around. Several of my friends have one in their garage and all love it An EXCELLENT heater over all and a EXCELLENT company selling them. A++++++

The price was the best on the internet. The shipping was fast.
Installed it over 2 weekend after many trips to the hardware store for fitting, pipe, vents, etc.
It works great but it's not as quiet as I had hoped. It's not loud, just a lot of fan noise and I need to turn up my music when it's running.
I got the 45,000 BTU model and it may be too much heater for my 1 1/2 car garage in Santa Cruz but it may be perfect when the temperature drops to 40 and the rain picks up.(Posted on 10/12/11)

A neighbor of mine had moved from Wisconsin to the north Georgia mountains. He had re-installed a Hot Dawg he had used up north and explained that it had operated flawlessly for six years. Works as advertised and QC was a pleasure to deal with.

Ive owned the 125,000 btu Hot Dawg now for 2 winters. It has performed flawlessly. It heats my 30x50 pole barn from 35-60 in 20 minutes (10' ceiling, well insulated). I probally could have got away with a smaller model, 100 or 75 btu model, but I wanted quick heat instead of steady constant heat..(I do not heat the barn full time and didnt want to wait a hour or 2 to get it up to temp). Awesome heater!

Its a big heater for a 1200 sq.ft, insulated shop. Heats things up to about 65 in about 20 mins at 35 OAT. Fine for me as I use the shop for in and out stuff but a smaller version may be better economically and cycle wise for constant use. A bit noisy. As advertised-great shipping, price and product. 2 years now and going strong.

Tried the cheaper brands but they weren't reliable The Modine is expensive, but I think it was a good investment. I can't afford unreliable heat in my business.

- Modine Hot Dawg Is Great! Review by Heater Guy
-
I work as a professional in the HVAC/R industry. I have worked on industrial chillers to residential units. This Modine Hot Dawg is what I decided to put in the garage, and I am very pleased. I had it installed and running within 3 hours with the help from my father. It really is a great little heater, thats efficient, easy to install, and works great. It's very compact and simple, and really a great design. I have had it running for approx 25 hrs and burned about 20 gallons of propane.

- perfect for my gararge - workshop Review by Skyryder

Quality product. Heats 2 car garage-workshop. Could be a little quieter. Instructions hidden inside unit had to call to discover where to find them. More info on venting accessories and applications when ordering on-line would be an asset.

- QUALITY PRODUCT Review by Trail Twister
-
I built a shelf in corner of garage up high so I could set the unit on and work on it myself. I noticed a wire hanging loose upon inspection and figured it had to go to igniter. (probably shipping problem) On startup It would not fire up and it was hard to read the label on what the problem was on inside of unit because it was upside down. ( Modine should have this label in owners manual.) I tracked it down to a pinched (bent) hose for the air switch. After that the unit works great and is a quality piece of equipment.Would definently recommend anybody to buy this unit.

- Easy to install. Great value. Review by Michael

Couldn't find installation instructions at first. Thought they were not packed in the box. After some fustration found them INSIDE the unit. If that's where you normally put them have a label on the outside of the unit telling that is where installation an waranty are.

- these are great heaters. Review by Scott Backlund

I have a friend that has a 75,000 unit in his garage and he loves it. I bought a 125,000 unit for my garage that is a 1500 sf building. I installed it in no time . I ordered this on line on a Saturday and by Tuesday it was at my house with no damage at all.Not only am I glad that I bought this, I have told alot of my friends about these heaters as well. I do have a neighbor/ friend that also bought one this last week, only to find out that he has had some problems with his order. It took longer for him to recieve it and when he did there were some problems.

Great Heater...Ordered On-Line and received within 3 days. Installation was a breeze and it heats my 3.5 card garage in a flash. Priced other heaters at a big box and nothing can compare to price and quality at QC. I'll be back for more products..Thanks

- There's a big difference in quality. Review by Phillip
-
I purchased a Mr. Heater . Returned it for a Modine Hot Dawg. It is unbelievable the difference in quality. Stainless steel tube heat exchanger verses stamped spot welded sheet metal, thicker gauge sheet metal chassis, die-cast combustion blower housing verses sheet metal, higher quality fan blades and motor on main blower. This unit will out last Mr. Heater 2 to 1. Well worth the additional cost.

- Glad I bought it! Review by SRVela

Overall, this is a great heater. It keeps the shop warm, and does not seem to be overly expensive to run. It was quite difficult to install, as the venting instructions were confusing (and my ceiling, being high and slanted made for a tough one-man installation). QC Supply was very helpful in getting me the correct conversion kit for 8500 ft. elevation and that was a breeze.

- A Hot Dawg for a cold state! Review by John the do-it-yourselfer
-
I purchased a Modine Hot Dawg 75 and once the proper unit was installed it's become the envy of the neighborhood and my family's new best friend.Even during the summer being able to switch the thermostat to Fan mode the fan in the Hot Dawg puts out enough air to be felt over the entire 3 car garage and it does a great job of keeping my garage warm in the winter.I usually run the theromostat at 40 degress since the temp here in MN often drop down to -10-40 (not windchill actual temp! brrrrr) so when outside it's -20 and the garage is 40 and the house is 68 it's quiet a nice step up in comfort and if I'm working in the garage I have got the entire garage up to 70 above in minutes. To properly meet code you either have to use real large single wall vent pipe with a drain tube or just spend for the ALG24C grade pipe which is expensive ($200 for 5 feet) but works great and then you can run standard 3" or 4" diameter depending on the size of your Dawg.I love my Hot Dawg!
