Go green wearing Bullhide® Panama Hats:  Panama Straw Palms are hardy and prolific in their natural habitat and they have been considered as a renewable resource for products that have an especially low impact on the environment. Only organic products are used to promote their growth. Furthermore, colorants from seeds (not chemicals) are used to obtain different straw color shades. Since all Bullhide® Genuine Panama Hats are handmade with this natural straw, they are completely eco-friendly.

How Panama Straw Hats are Made:  Bullhide® Panama hats are hand woven exclusively in the Andes mountains of South America using fibers of "Paja Toquillo" straw. The Carludovica Palmata plant, whose leaves provide this natural straw, takes over 3 years to reach full maturity. The leaves are then cut by hand, bundled and transported to the harvester's village, usually by a horse or donkey. The toquillo leaves are first split or torn into thin filaments or straw and then boiled or "cooked" before being dried-bleached by the sun. The bundles of straw are then transported and sold to the weavers. Weaving is largely a cottage industry, which take place in the village close to the coastal plantations or in the Andes mountains. The weavers can produce a course grade hat in 2-3 days, however to produce a superfine quality hat may take up to 3 months.
